Politics and friendship

Politics and friendship

A woman is on the Presidential ballot. Some of us are pumped to say “Madame President.” Some are less excited.

What to do when you and a friend fundamentally disagree about politics? You’re both convinced you’re right.

Short answer: breathe. Of course you can be friends with someone with different political views!

You probably didn’t meet while discussing your voting record. YOU and she are each more complex than your feelings about immigration or abortion.

A political thing you likely have in common? We all want a more civil country and discourse. And it starts with us. If we can’t find common ground with our existing friends, how can we expect Republicans and Democrats in Washington to agree and get anything done?

We’re not suggesting you go to a political rally for the other team. You definitely don’t have to wear matching merch or fake agree. But you can choose to listen...and just bite your tongue (hard). No bullying. No insults, not even backhanded or subtle snubs.

Or, you may just have to agree that you disagree. If it comes down to it… make it a battle of the lawn signs and find a way to laugh and remember that your friendship is built on other things.
